Acquiring a partnership or other share in a veterinary practice or buying it outright can be an excellent investment. But how will you provide the funding required.
Table of Contents
Buying into an established veterinary practice can avoid the costs and uncertainties of setting up, and let you work in a business that is profitable from your very first day.
Partner Buy-ins are common with larger practices and may offer an opportunity to bring in new talent as part of an expansion plan, or as a way for an existing partner to leave the business.
Funding will be required from you as a joining partner, either to support the growth plans of the business or to recompense the exiting partner for his or her hard work in building up the practice.
However, with a Buyout, you may be able to acquire the entire practice, but this is more common with smaller, one-person veterinary practices.
The sums involved will reflect the turnover and the potential of the business, as well as the proportion being offered - but it is always essential to find the most appropriate kind of funding solution, along with the most competitive rates.
Funding a Partner Buy-in or Buyout
At Rangewell, we know several ways to provide the scale of funding required with Buy-in and Buyout funding. Solutions can include:
Secured Loans
The scale of funding required with larger practices - which can be £250,000 or more - may make some form of Secured Loan necessary. Security, such as the business premises or your home, may be required and will be at risk if you cannot keep up repayments.
Practice Loan
It may also be possible to arrange a specialist Practice Loan that is, effectively, an advance secured on the future performance of the business itself.
Unsecured Loans
Lenders may provide an Unsecured Loan, repayable over three to five years to support a Buy-in or Buyout. No security is required, but you will need to provide a Personal Guarantee.
Vendor Loan
With this type of finance, the vendor can actually help fund the transition by leaving some of their equity within the company as loans to be repaid over time. This may be required by some lenders who want to see evidence that the plan is fully viable by the sellers.
“Working in my own practice would mean I could concentrate on the types of animals that I was interested in - equines. When I found a growing practice that specialised in horses, and which had an opportunity to join as a partner, I jumped at the chance. When it came to funding, I needed help - Rangewell was able to set it all up for me.”
