The secret that will cut your kitchen’s energy bills in half

Multi-fuel catering products dramatically reduce energy consumption when compared to conventional catering equipment. A study carried out by the University of Zurich arranged for a restaurant at ABB Schweiz to have equipment from Frima and sister manufacturing company Rational installed.

Before the project began, the restaurant which produces around 380 meals daily used 0.58 kWh electricity and 2.72 litres of water in the preparation of each meal. This excludes the use of dishwashers, which wasn’t part of the study.

After the 8 weeks, results showed a massive reduction in energy consumption for each meal. Energy usage fell to 0.38 kWh, down 34%. Water usage also fell by 1.28 litres, saving 53% – just over half. The findings of this study were so significant that it raised the restaurant’s BREEAM (Building Research Establishment Environmental Assessment Method) rating considerably.  

Delighted project manager at ABB Schweiz, Anton Bucher, expresses that: “The cost savings allowed us to create an attractive front-of-house cooking concept, with a pizza oven and a pasta machine and boiler, without needing any extra budget.”

Graham Kille, Frima’s managing director in the UK, said the results of the project illustrated just how significantly modern cooking appliances can cut running costs for operators.

Multi-fuel catering equipment can unlock hundreds to even thousands of pounds for caterers. Kille adds: “What’s more, the restaurant was able to increase the range of meals it offered, thanks to the extra cooking options offered by the Frima and Rational appliances.”
